Introduction
The first-time finish is the one with no hiding place. There is no controlling touch to fix a bad approach — the contact is the technique, and it has to be right the moment the ball arrives. It is also the finish that beats organised defences, because it gives the keeper no time to set. Building it requires the thing the StunpreX library never apologises for: a high volume of quality, focused repetition (Conviction 9 — quality reps beat distracted ones, and quality at scale wins; Conviction 28 — the relationship with the ball is built by time striking it, nothing substitutes).
This drill treats the first-time strike as a first touch that happens to go in the goal (Conviction 4 — first touch is the foundation skill; here the first and only touch is the finish, so the foundation is fully exposed). It builds from a still, clean service up to a driven, match-speed ball across the body, training both feet because a one-footed finisher is half a finisher (Conviction 6).
The contact is football-specific from the first rep — striking a moving ball toward a target, not hammering a static one at a wall (Conviction 27 — specificity wins). Volume with intent is the method: many reps, each one focused, levelled up by service difficulty rather than by novelty.

- Striker (A): arrives onto the ball on a diagonal run, ~12m from goal.
- Server: to one side, feeding the ball across A's path — ground passes first, then low driven balls.
- Target corners: the two bottom corners of the goal are the aim; a keeper makes it live.
- Run a server on each side over the session so the strike is trained from both angles and onto both feet.
Description
One rep:
- A starts a few steps back; on the server's cue, A makes a short diagonal run onto the ball.
- The server feeds across A's path at a chosen weight.
- A strikes first time toward a bottom corner — no control touch. The body shape (planted foot beside the ball, head steady, ankle locked) does the work the missing control touch would otherwise have done (Conviction 9 — the deliberate, focused rep is where this technique is built; sloppy volume teaches nothing).
- Reset and repeat at pace; the server keeps the rhythm so volume accumulates.
- Alternate finishing foot by side of service across the session (Conviction 6).
The tally is clean contacts on target, not goals alone. A crisp first-time strike that's saved is a successful rep; a scuffed one that dribbles in is not.
Progressions
- Level 1 (baseline): ground passes at a steady weight, generous angle; the striker grooves the contact.
- Level 2 (vary the weight): the server changes the pace of the feed each rep; the striker must adjust the timing of the strike to the speed of the ball (the perceptual read of an arriving ball).
- Level 3 (low driven balls): the service comes in low and driven rather than rolling; the striker must read the bounce and strike through it cleanly (Conviction 36 — a faster, less predictable ball overdoes the match demand).
- Level 4 (weak foot only): all finishes with the weaker foot; the run and body shape must set it up (Conviction 6 made explicit).
- Level 5 (elite — disguised service): the server delays and varies whether the ball is cut back, driven, or clipped, called late; the striker reads the type of ball and finishes first time, off either foot, with a live keeper. The full first-time finishing read, at match speed.
Coach guidance
Look for:
- The plant foot. Is it beside the ball and pointing at the target, or behind and off-balance? The plant foot aims the strike.
- A still head and locked ankle. The clean first-time strike comes from a steady head over the ball and a firm ankle on contact; everything else is timing.
- Timing of the run. Does the striker arrive onto the ball in stride, or have to stop and reach? Arriving in stride is what makes the first-time strike possible (Conviction 4 — the quality of the contact is the foundation everything else rests on).
Cues: "Plant foot pointing where you want it to go." · "Head still, over the ball." · "Don't lean back — stay over it and pass it into the corner." · "Meet it in stride — don't wait for it."
Praise: the clean contact and the focused repetition. "Lovely contact — head still, side-foot through the corner. Do ten more exactly like that." (Conviction 9 — name the quality, then ask for the volume; Conviction 28 — the reps are the rent.)
Don't fix yet: the power of the strike — a placed, clean first-time finish beats a powerful scuffed one; build the contact and the placement first, and the power follows the technique.
Watch points
- The striker leans back and skies it. "Where's your head? Stay over the ball and the ball stays down."
- They take a touch out of habit instead of finishing first time. "No touch — the strike is the touch. Trust it."
- The plant foot is behind the ball, so the strike is off-balance. "Get your standing foot beside the ball, pointing at the corner."
- They only strike with the strong foot, even off the far-side service. "Which foot did the ball ask for? Half a finisher uses one foot." (Conviction 6.)
- Volume drops focus — the tenth rep is sloppier than the first. "Same quality on rep ten as rep one. That's the difference." (Conviction 9.)
