Introduction
Before a player can choose when to tackle, their body has to be able to hold a defensive shape — low, balanced, side-on, able to move in two directions without crossing the feet. Most young defenders cannot, so they square up, get caught flat-footed, and lunge. The lunge is not a decision problem; it is a movement problem dressed up as one. This drill fixes the movement base first.
The Jockey Ladder trains containment footwork as pure movement quality — the agility and mobility that have to exist before the defensive decision can be made well (Conviction 16 — mobility before strength, strength before speed; the sequence is not skippable). The player learns to shuffle, drop-step, and recover their angle while keeping their weight low and their hips side-on, so that when a real attacker arrives the stance is already automatic and the brain is free to read the body in front of it (Conviction 30 — cognitive load matters; the footwork must be free so the reading can happen).
It is a modest drill that builds the floor. Done on the 200th rep with the same low, patient quality, it is what separates a defender who contains from one who scrambles (Conviction 13 — the constraint of the ladder forces the quality the open pitch never demands).

- Ladder: 6–8 cones staggered left and right down a 10m lane, roughly 1.5m apart.
- Player: starts at the bottom in a low, side-on stance — knees bent, weight on the balls of the feet, one shoulder leading.
- Optional shadow phase: a partner with the ball walks slowly down the lane; the defender mirrors them instead of following the cones.
Description
Phase A — the cone ladder (solo):
- The player moves up the lane, shuffling to meet each cone as if it were an attacker to contain.
- At each cone they hold the side-on stance, drop-step to change the angle, and recover — never crossing the feet, never standing tall.
- The quality marker is the stance, not the speed: low, balanced, able to push off in either direction at any instant.
Phase B — the shadow (pairs):
- A partner walks the ball slowly down the lane, changing direction unpredictably.
- The defender mirrors them at a constant 2m gap, keeping side-on, channelling the partner toward one side.
- No tackle. The only job is to stay in front, stay low, stay balanced — for the full length of the lane (Conviction 3 — the defender chooses the angle to show; the decision is which way to channel, not when to dive).
Run 30–40 second efforts, 30 seconds rest. The unpredictable partner movement is the variability that makes the footwork robust (Conviction 22 — varied input builds a stance that holds against any attacker, not just a rehearsed one).
Progressions
- Level 1 (baseline): cone ladder, walking pace, focus entirely on stance and no crossed feet.
- Level 2 (tempo): same ladder at jogging pace; the stance must survive the increased speed.
- Level 3 (shadow walk): Phase B with a partner walking and changing direction; mirror at 2m.
- Level 4 (shadow jog): the partner jogs and adds body feints; the defender holds the gap and reads the hips, not the ball.
- Level 5 (live containment): the partner becomes a live attacker trying to reach a line behind the defender; the defender contains for 8 seconds without lunging. The footwork now serves a real contest — but winning the ball is still not the job; containing is (Conviction 25 — when the attacker does beat them, the beaten rep shows exactly which footwork broke down).
Coach guidance
Look for:
- Crossed feet. The single most common fault and the one that gets defenders beaten. The feet should shuffle, never cross.
- Standing tall. A high centre of gravity cannot change direction quickly. Knees bent, hips low, the whole way.
- Hip angle. Side-on, not square. The angle is what lets the defender both delay and intercept.
Cues: "Stay low — pretend the ceiling is just above your head." · "Shuffle, don't cross." · "Show one shoulder — which way are you sending them?" · "Eyes up — watch the hips, not the cones."
Praise: the quality of the stance, not how fast the lane was finished. "That was low and balanced the whole way — that's the defender's base."
Don't fix yet: the speed of the footwork in early sessions — a slow, correct stance beats a fast, sloppy one every time. Build the shape first; the speed comes once the shape is reliable.
Watch points
- The player races the ladder to finish first and loses all stance quality. "This isn't a race. Where's your balance at each cone?"
- Feet cross over on the direction change. "What happened to your feet there? Shuffle — keep them under you."
- The defender follows the ball in the shadow phase instead of reading the body. "You're watching the ball. What are their hips doing?" (Conviction 30 — the perceptual read is the point; the footwork exists to make room for it.)
- The gap collapses or blows out in the shadow phase — the defender either tailgates or drifts. "Two metres, always. Close enough to challenge, far enough to react."
Closing reflection
- "Where did your stance break down — was it speed, balance, or the feet crossing?"
- "In the shadow phase, could you tell which way your partner was going before they went? What told you?"
- "Why does staying low matter when a real attacker is coming at you?"
