Yes Rondo — Receiver Calls for Young Communicators

A three-player Discovery-age game with one rule — the ball-carrier can only pass when they hear a teammate call 'Yes!' — planting the receiver-call habit through play.

Introduction

The full Receiver Calls Rondo — with 3v3, directional vocabulary, foot declarations, and call compliance tracking — is designed for 9–12 Foundation and older. None of those mechanics belong at Discovery age. A five-year-old doesn't need a compliance metric. They need one rule that makes communication feel powerful and a space large enough to enjoy using it.

Yes Rondo is what comes before the base drill. Same foundational principle — the receiver makes a sound before the pass is played — reduced to its single most essential form: one word. "Yes!" The discovery that speaking makes the ball move is the seed of everything else in the Drill 07 family.

The one rule of the game: the ball-carrier can only pass when they hear "Yes!" from a teammate. That is it. No direction. No foot. No vocabulary beyond the affirmative — clear, loud, and before the pass motion begins.

The session's success measure: the children want to come back.

  • The grid: a loose 12m × 12m square (larger than the base drill's 10m × 10m — more space, more time for the habit to form). A garden works at 8m × 8m minimum.
  • Three players: two without the ball, one with it. At Phase 1 and 2, no defender — three people with a ball learning the call-and-pass rhythm. The constraint alone (no call = no pass) is sufficient challenge at this age.
  • One ball. Spare balls are welcome for quick restarts, but a brief pause to retrieve the ball is fine.
  • No defender at Phase 1 or 2. Defensive pressure is not needed for the habit to form at Discovery age. The "Yes!" rule is the challenge. A defender appears only when all three children are calling reliably — typically in Phase 3.

Description

The one rule: the ball-carrier can only pass when they hear "Yes!" from the intended receiver.

One round, repeated as long as the children want:

  1. Ball-carrier holds the ball. They look at both teammates.
  2. One teammate calls "Yes!" — loud enough to be heard, before any pass motion begins.
  3. Ball-carrier passes to the player who called.
  4. New ball-carrier receives, holds the ball, waits for the next "Yes!"
  5. Repeat.

No counting. If a ball-carrier plays without hearing "Yes!", pause briefly — not to correct, but to reset: "Did you hear a 'Yes!' before that one? Let's run that one again." Light, warm, no drama.

If no call comes: the ball-carrier holds the ball and waits. If the wait is long and no call arrives, the adult can prompt: "Is anyone ready?" This gives the off-ball players the nudge without correcting them directly.

Back-pass rule (optional, Phase 2+): the ball cannot return immediately to the person who just passed it. This keeps all three players calling and moving. Introduce it only once the calling habit is forming — typically after three or four sessions.

Progressions

Phase 1 — Three players, no defender: as described. Three children passing, one ball, two callers. No back-pass rule. No counting. Success: the ball-carrier pauses and waits for a "Yes!" before playing.

Phase 2 — Back-pass rule: the ball cannot return immediately to the person who just played it. Keeps all three players calling and receiving in turn. Introduce only once Phase 1 calling is comfortable — when the pause-and-listen habit is appearing without prompting.

Phase 3 — Light defender: an adult or older player enters as a slow, passive defender applying mild pressure on the ball-carrier. The call window narrows slightly; the ball-carrier must listen while also tracking where the defender is. Introduce only when Phase 2 is settled.

Phase 4 — Competing calls: occasionally, both off-ball players call simultaneously. The ball-carrier must choose. This is the lightest introduction to the competing-call scenario from the base drill — experienced here as a surprise moment in a familiar game, not as a designed challenge.

Phase 5 — Role reversal: the child holds the ball while the adults call "Yes!" The child decides whether to pass and to whom. Enormous fun; also lets the child feel what it is like to have two people wanting the ball at once. The perspective-switch deepens both halves of the habit.

Coach guidance

At Discovery age, the adult is a facilitator, not an analyst. Enforce the one rule; keep the energy light.

Look for:

  • Any child who calls "Yes!" before the ball-carrier starts their pass motion — even if quiet, even if the pass is imperfect.
  • Children developing early call timing — calling while the ball-carrier is still considering options, rather than waiting until they are already about to play.
  • The ball-carrier pausing briefly before playing, eyes up, waiting to hear something. That pause is the entire habit in formation.
  • Spontaneous refinement: a child who starts calling "Yes, here!" or "Yes, me!" without being asked is developing specificity naturally. Follow it; don't pre-empt it.

Cues to give:

  • "Did you hear a 'Yes!' before you played?" (warm, not accusatory — to the ball-carrier who played without one)
  • "Who's ready? Tell them!" (to the off-ball players who haven't called yet)
  • "Loud enough for the whole garden to hear!" (to the child whose call didn't reach the ball-carrier)
  • "You waited for them — that's it." (to the ball-carrier who paused to listen)

Praise:

  • Any call made before the pass motion: "Yes! You said it before it arrived."
  • Any visible pause by the ball-carrier while listening: "You waited. Good."
  • The sequence working cleanly — call → pass → receive: "Did you feel that? That one worked."
  • Any child who calls from a position where they can be seen and heard: "Good spot — they could find you."

Don't fix yet:

  • Pass accuracy or weight in early sessions. The call habit is the priority.
  • The specific words used. "Yep!", "Here!", "Yes!" — all fine at this age. Specificity emerges naturally through play.
  • Which player the ball-carrier passes to. The habit of listening before playing is the development goal; who they pass to is secondary.
  • Children who call too early or too often. Over-calling is the better error at Discovery age. Silence doesn't improve through correction; over-calling refines itself through play.

Watch points

  • Ball-carrier plays without a call, then off-ball players call after the pass has already left. Pause briefly: "Did the 'Yes!' come before or after you played?" No drama. Reconstruct, then restart.
  • Only one child calls every round — the others wait to receive but never initiate. "Who hasn't called yet this round? Everyone gets to say 'Yes!' at some point." Warm and inclusive.
  • Calls too quiet to be heard from across the grid. "Say it louder than you think you need to — they have to hear you from over there." One prompt; let play refine the rest.
  • An adult begins counting silent passes or tracking compliance. Privately, to the adult: all counting and performance measurement is suspended at Discovery age. If counting has started, remove it immediately. The only metric that belongs here is the child's willingness to come back.
